Leith Theatre, Leith, Edinburgh – 10 August 2018
I wandered along to the Leith Theatre yesterday evening, to catch the second night of the Edinburgh International Festival’s “Light On The Shore” series of gigs. The line up was impressive: Free Love (formally known as Happy Meals); C Duncan; and headliners, Django Django.

Edinburgh Castle Esplanade – 20 July 2018
Last Friday was real fun. The drizzle had just about stopped as evening approached. The temperature, in Scotland’s capital, was warm enough for everyone to wander outside in clothes that are usually reserved for our Mediterranean vacations. High in the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade stands, one portly gentlemen decided to entertain everyone with an impromptu striptease. Thankfully this was hastily stopped by security personnel, much to the relief of onlookers. Down at ground level, audience members who were clearly old enough to know better, had obviously been partaking in a lot of refreshment during the afternoon. Many were trying, and failing, to remember the dance moves to the sounds that filled the air. The one common theme that bound us together was that, like Robert de Niro, we were all waiting for Bananarama to take to the stage.

Sunday Afternoons 27 May to 08 July from 15.00 – 17.00 on BBC Radio Scotland
Over the past few weeks I’ve been tuning into Radio Scotland on a Sunday afternoon to catch Grant’s excellent show about all things vinyl. Filling the summer gap, left by football, this is the second year the show has been aired, and the content has remained as varied this year as it was last. As the name of the show implies, all the music played on it is on vinyl. Sometimes the records are from Mr Stott’s every increasing personal collection, and sometimes they are sourced from the BBC’s library and archives. There’s something quite therapeutic about hearing the crackles and imperfections of other people’s vinyl being played. I’m sure from the DJ’s perspective there is also great satisfaction in lining up tracks ready to play. That’s a skill in itself, and more substantial than just pressing buttons.

John Grant with the BBC Philharmonic : Live In Concert
I was totally amazed when I received this unexpected gift. I’ve been a fan of John Grant and his music for several years now, but have never had the opportunity to see him perform live. That changes at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival in August, because I have a ticket to see him then. I’d mentioned this to my friend Jeff, who is also a fan of Mr Grant and has seen him live several times I think. Not long after our correspondence, this sumptuos piece of grey-green vinyl arrived. I hurriedly unwrapped it and put on to my turntable.

Usher Hall, Edinburgh – 14 April 2018
On Saturday 14 April I wandered along to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, with my regular gig-partner Patrick, to see Public Service Broadcasting. I was rather intrigued to see this band live, as I couldn’t envisage how they would replicated their music live. But before the main event started, we were treated to an equally enthralling set by Jane Weaver and her band. I didn’t realise that she was supporting them. So it was an evening full of surprises.
